DHRI
is the Research and Development arm of Barwon Health, and collaborative
research is undertaken between DHRI and clinical units within Barwon
Health. In addition, DHRI provides a range of services to Barwon
Health such as Pathology Teaching, Mortuary Services, Red Cross
Blood Bank and Tissue Bank. The DHRI building also houses the University
of Melbourne Department of Surgery and the Deakin University Department
of Nursing.
Tissue
Banking
DHRI
performs Cord Blood and Bone Banking. Both of these services have
been established according to the code of Good Manufacturing Practice
for Tissue Banks, and the Bone Bank is licensed under the Therapeutic
Goods Administration. Cord Blood Banking is undertaken in collaboration
with ARCBS, and research is being undertaken to establish optimal
collection, processing and storage technologies.

stem cell research

mechanisms in haemopoietic stem cells

marrow micrometastases

of bone marrow micrometastases in non-small cell lung cancer
(in collaboration with the University of Melbourne Department
of Surgery)

of bone marrow micrometastases and circulating malignant cells
in breast cancer (in collaboration with Andrew Love Cancer Centre)
Hereditary
Hyperferitinaemia with Cataract syndrome
The
DHRI Australian Rickettsial Reference Laboratory (ARRL) performs
reference testing for Rickettsial illnesses for Australia and some
other South East Asian countries, and exports reagents to several
countries. ARRL also has several research programs in the area of
Rickettsial infections. A new project that is about to commence
will be investigating the potential role of antenatal immunisation
for the prevention of neonatal pertussis infection.
